My name is Kadie Hessing, and I am a student at Brigham Young University-Idaho. I am majoring in Public Health and have the career goal of becoming a health education specialist, focusing on diabetes care and education. This blog will reflect my thoughts and insights gained during my time in my Family Relations course as I seek to relate the content I am learning to those who are struggling to see the value of family and marriage in our society today.

Sex Differences

 During a class lecture this week, my classmates, professor, and I had the opportunity to review scientific research on sex differences between men and women. After having that sex difference discussion, it's pretty safe to say that this topic can be contentious depending on how you approach it, but the way my professor tackled it helped limit this outcome. As a part of our lecture, the class took an opportunity to reflect on and brainstorm about some of the challenges and benefits that can arise from male-female differences in family relationships. Divorce

  This week was the last week of lectures for my class. So, naturally, we talked about a pretty intense topic within families: divorce. While reflecting on this topic and writing about it, I struggled quite a bit. As someone who has never personally experienced either of these situations, I feel a little unqualified to give my two cents. During class this week, I watched as many people expressed high emotions over this subject and the challenges and heartache it can present. However, regardless of my inexperience, I still would like to share what I learned. One of the first things my class discussed was some of the reasons people get divorced. Initially, the conversation turned to cheating and infidelity. However, as my classmates and I soon learned, these circumstances don't end in as many separations as we think. Planning Ahead

  Last week, I talked about the complicated nature of dating and how some current trends in romantic relationship patterns in today's dating culture aren't the most effective. This week, I was reminded of this fact again as I had a class discussion on wedding planning and engagements. And although I am not quite ready to make those steps in my life, I have seen some of the common trends that can frustrate wedding planning, engagements, and, eventually, marriages that play out in the lives of my peers. Here are some of my thoughts and what I learned this week: First, how we often discuss love can skew our understanding of relationships. For example, we commonly use terms like "falling in to love," "falling out of love," and "love is blind" to explain people's connections.
